Wildflowers in East Ayrshire

The conservation of biodiversity

Biodiversity and nature-based solutions are critical to achieving net zero actions by 2045.

Under the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004, all public bodies in Scotland must further the conservation of biodiversity when carrying out their functions and responsibilities.

Rewilding

We recognise that rewilding will not be possible in every area of East Ayrshire. A measured approach will be required as to where grass is left to grow and we will work to ensure that a collective view is taken from our communities as to where this is appropriate.

This annual process will guide how Greener Communities will link to rewilding and environmental areas of work including current initiatives like No Mow May, where some areas are cut while others are left to grow or have reduced cutting programmes.

What you can do to help

Encourage wildlife in your garden by:

  • planting native wildflowers, trees and shrubs:
    • plants offer a wealth of benefits for your garden and the environment and are particularly good for pollinators likes bees
    • flowers are perfectly adapted to attract and nourish essential creatures, like bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, promoting a healthy ecosystem
    • as they are already used to our soil and climate, native plants require less maintenance
    • they thrive naturally, reducing the need for watering, fertilisers, and pesticides
  • leave some areas of your garden as long grass:
    • even the smallest spaces can make a big difference for wildlife
    • a narrow strip of wildflowers or native plants along a wall or hedge can act as a wildlife corridor
    • this green pathway helps creatures like voles and newts navigate your garden safely
