Children & Families

The Children (Scotland) Act 1995 sets out duties and powers available to local authorities to support children and their families

There are 3 key principles to which we adhere:

  • the welfare of the child is of greatest importance
  • all legal involvement with children and families must be justified
  • the child should have a voice in decision making.

In accordance with the Act Social Services has a key role in providing support, advice and a range of services to assist children and their parents to ensure that young people can live safely with their families in their local communities whenever possible.

The needs of children and their families are assessed through the Children and Family Services Fieldwork Unit where services are provided aimed at supporting children and their families to meet their assessed needs.

Specialist services are provided through the Children and Families Service Unit.

The Scottish Government recently launched a website called Looked after Children & Young People, a resource for parents, organisations and children & young people. Use the link in the right hand menu to access the site or type http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/lookedafterchildren/index.asp into your browser.
