A WHEELY GOOD DAY!

Fri, 02 Jul 2010

East Ayrshire’s Learning Disability Partnership, ‘VIP Partners’, held a special Bike Day and VIP Cafe in support of Learning Disability Awareness Week recently.

VIP Partners, a family carers’ action forum, held ‘Funky Bike Day 3’ at the North West Kilmarnock Area Centre, which saw some specially adapted bikes being whizzed round the room by some experienced (and some non-experienced!) drivers. The bikes are for use by individuals with learning disabilities and can make a huge difference to people who normally rely on walking sticks, zimmers and wheelchairs to get around.

Also at the North West Centre on the day was the VIP’s Community Cafe which is usually run from the Gateway Centre every Saturday morning, welcoming people with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, along with their friends and family.

Provost Stephanie Young, who joined in the fun on the day, said: “These events were just two of many that were held across East Ayrshire to mark Learning Disability Awareness Week and it’s wonderful that VIP Partners were able to support it. The bikes they have are fantastic and can give people with learning disabilities freedom and exercise, as well as allowing them to get rid of stress which has an obvious impact on them and their carers. The cafe is another great resource where people can enjoy home-made cakes and scones and also join in with a weekly sing-along!”
