A76 Mauchline: £1.6m Essential Reconstruction Project Begins

Fri, 02 Jul 2010

Essential reconstruction works in the village of Mauchline get underway on Monday 12 July for 10 weeks. This £1.6m Transport Scotland investment, designed by trunk road managers Amey, will see the delivery of 1.7km of resurfacing, drainage and landscaping works on this busy section of the A76.

Amey, along with their Principal Contractor Barr Construction, shall take possession of the carriageway from Monday 12 July, and begin works at the south end of the village, to ensure the works in this area are completed before the end of the school holidays. The project will then move north and will reach completion over one last weekend, at Mauchline Cross.

Over the past two years extensive research, consultation and liaison has taken place with Mauchline Community Council, Elderly Forum, Elected Officials, Local Authorities and Strathclyde Police, to determine the best time to undertake the works whilst minimising disruption. Local businesses have also been contacted and convenience stores will still be able to have their perishable goods delivered during the works.

All trunk road traffic will be diverted to ensure the safety of roadworkers and residents during the project. Local access will be maintained.

On completion the community of Mauchline will benefit from a visual improvement to the road through the village, which is currently in a poor condition with numerous potholes and depressions. Existing parking bays shall be resurfaced, drainage repairs and landscaping upgrades will also benefit the community for years to come, as there will be a reduced need for future maintenance, and therefore further disruption to the local community.

Different diversion routes will be in place for each phase of works. The diversion routes will be clearly signed to assist through traffic travelling further a field. Amey will keep residents, businesses, the local press and officials updated on the progress of each phase and advise the diversion routes accordingly. Internet users can keep up to date with information by following Amey on Twitter www.twitter.com/AmeySouthWest

The first phase begins at the south end of the village, where 700m of carriageway will be dug out and replaced. During this period HGV traffic will be diverted via the A70 and A77 and all other traffic will divert via the A70, B743 and A77.

Colin Mackenzie, Amey’s unit manager for south west Scotland said:
“We have built up a strong relationship with members of the Mauchline community over the past two years and we are committed to providing an improved infrastructure to support the high level of traffic travelling through the town and for the community.

“We are working hard to provide useful advance information to residents of Mauchline and users of the A76 and leaflets and posters are being distributed throughout the community. A letter drop is planned for all homes located directly on the A76 within the works site and weekly updates will be provided to local press and a range of other interested parties.”

As spokesman for Barr Construction said:
“We will be working to ensure we are clear of the heart of the village before the school holidays come to an end and we will be working hand in hand with Transport Scotland and Amey to keep the community updated of our progress.

“Access to local properties will be maintained wherever possible. There may however be some short-term restrictions, however we will provide advance notice to homeowners so that they can make alternative arrangements.”

A Site Liaison Officer will be on-site and can be contacted on 07817999444 for public enquiries regarding the works.
